Natural Beauty
Inexpensive products straight from nature
by Michelle Gibeault Traub, R.D.
Ever take the time to read the label on your favorite hand cream or moisturizing lotion? The list of ingredients can be downright scary with everything from parabens which are known to upset endocrine function, to preservatives that have been linked to cancer. And you’re supposed to put this stuff directly on your skin? Although studies frequently site that most of the scary-sounding chemical additives don’t pose a threat, why take the chance when there are fabulous, all-natural beauty aids all around us? Best of all, many of these natural finds cost next to nothing!
Aloe Vera – Talk about a multi-tasker. Aloe vera gel, which comes from the plant bearing its name, is a natural healer and beautifier too. It soothes minor cuts and burns. In addition, aloe vera gel is great as an all-over moisturizer. In a pinch it even serves as an inexpensive hair gel. Pack a tube of the handy gel for your next vacation. It’s not only a proven remedy for too much sun, but it’s also a space-saver taking the place of additional bottles of moisturizer, shave gel, or hair product.
Plant Oils – Oils are naturally emollient, softening skin and helping to seal in moisture. Jojoba and olive oils also give hair a natural sheen and softness, and make nails shine without the need for toxic nail polish. Likewise, coconut oil (which is solid at room temperature) makes a great body cream or hair pomade, plus it has a delicious, tropical scent.
Tea Tree Oil – A natural anti-fungal and anti-bacterial, tea tree oil is a great acne fighter and dandruff tamer. Just a dab of the potent oil can help to clear up a pimple. For dandruff relief, mix a drop of tea tree oil with a bit of jojoba oil; massage into the scalp, leave on for a few minutes; and shampoo out. If you are not a fan of tea tree oil’s potent scent, look for shampoos that already contain the oil, which is often masked by peppermint. Keep tea tree oil away from pets, as it has been reported to be toxic to small animals.
Baking Soda – For less than $1 you can buy a box of baking soda which serves a variety of beauty roles. Our readers already know that baking soda is a great tooth whitener. The reason it works so well is because it is slightly abrasive. This trait makes it a good body scrub when mixed with your favorite shower gel. For oily or normal complexions it is even a good exfoliant when added to a creamy facial cleanser.
Apple Cider Vinegar – Another very inexpensive item, vinegar makes an excellent hair rinse and facial toner. Given its natural acidity, vinegar is great at dissolving oil making it a good choice for those with oily skin. It is also effective at dissolving hair product build-up leaving hair super shiny.
