A Healthy Valentine's Choice?
Chocolate and love | Love and chocolate
by the bhf buyer
Valentine's conjures images of heart shaped boxes filled with delicious chocolate. Under the banner of "love", Valentine's allows us to indulge in chocolate a bit more than usual. The latest research now suggests that chocolate may actually have healthful quality.
Cocoa is one of nature's leading sources of Flavanoids. Dark chocolate contains more flavanoids than most other food—including green tea, black tea, red wine, and blueberries.
Flavanoids serve as a potent antioxidant in the ongoing war that is waged inside our bodies; antioxidants represent our front line of defense against major health conditions such as heart disease, cancer and macular degeneration.
Chocolate also has been associated with mood elevation. To test the theory that chocolate enhances mood, a study was conducted at the University of Pennsylvania. The results suggest that it is not some secret chemical ingredient in chocolate that provides the euphoria, but the sensory experience...the taste, the smoothness and the aroma. Perhaps the mood-enhancing chemicals are just the "icing on the cake."
But while there may be some healthful positives to chocolate, it is still a confection containing both sugar and cocoa butter. So, don’t eat chocolate for its healthful benefits alone, just enjoy it more knowing it has some good stuff also! Happy Valentine’s Day!
